One Week Short Term Training Program on
'Computing, Simulation and
Modeling in Electronics Engineering'
18th - 22nd November, 2008
The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, as part of its continuing education program for faculty, organized a one week short term training program during 18th - 22nd November 2008. This was the first five day program in the history of SJCET; earlier programs by various departments were only of a single day.
The constrain the department had was that the Electronics Design and Automation Laboratory (where the hands on session of the training program was organized) is equipped with only thirty computers, which limits the number of participants to thirty. Even though the organizers expected less that fifteen external participants, the program had twenty three external participants from seven various colleges around Kottayam district. Due to these reasons, internal participants had to be limited to seven. The course being interdisciplinary, two faculty members each were selected from the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering and the Department of Applied Electronics & Instrumentation. Three participants were selected from the Department of Electronics & Communication, filling all possible seats for the training program. The training program was coordinated by Mr. Sabarinath G and Mr. Paul Ansel V. Various other committees (involving all faculty members of the department) were formed for the smooth conduct of the program. The STTP was inaugurated by 10:00 am on the 18th of November 2008 at the main block seminar hall of the college. The function started as usual by bowing to the Almighty. Prof. C P Sebastian, Head, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering delivered the welcome speech. During his talk, he mentioned about the need and importance of Computation, Simulation & Modeling in Electronics Engineering. Msg. Philip Njaralakkatt inaugurated the training program. 'Modeling and Simulation is a discipline, it is also very much an art form. One can learn about riding a bicycle from reading a book. To really learn to ride a bicycle one must become actively engaged with a bicycle. Modeling and Simulation follows much the same reality. You can learn much about modeling and simulation from reading books and talking with other people. Skill and talent in developing models and performing simulations is only developed through the building of models and simulating them" is what Msgr. Philip Njaralakkatt had to mention in his presidential address. The occasion was marked by the traditional by lighting the lamp.
Dr. C J Joseph, Principal, in his felicitation mentioned about different types of systems, their characteristics and properties. He also mentioned the efficiency of simulation and modeling in better understanding of the characteristics of a system as a whole and its individual components.
Day 1 : Matlab - the toolbox for engineers
The first session was on Matlab, a highly complex, interdisciplinary simulation tool, generally classified as the tool box for engineers. Prof. Neelakandhan P C, Iniversity College of Engineering, Muttom handled the session. "Matlab is an environment, with which engineers will fall in love with, if he really spends an hour daily for one week" said Prof. Neelakandhan.
Day 2: Simulation using Tanner, ActiveHDL & National Instruments LabView
The second day of the one-week program was handled by two young, dynamic engineers from Trident Tech Labs, Bangalore. The morning session was handled by Mr. Shyamsunder, in which he made a brief presentation on VHDL and went on to a demonstration of using simulation tools like Tanner and ActiveHDL.
Day 3: High resolution Image Restoration & Solitons in Optical Communication
Dr. Jiji C V, Asst. Professor, College of Engineering, Trivandrum delivered a talk on Image Restoration during the forenoon session. Even though the talk was focused on aspects on image restoration, Dr. Jiji started with the fundamental aspects of Image Processing as such.
Day 4: Emerging trends in communication & Network Security
Day four started off with Mr. Saju George, DGM (Mobile Services), BSNL delivering a talk on Emerging trends in communication. His detailed talk went through technologies on 2.75G, 3G, DSL, FTTH and so on. He, from his personal experience in the Indian telecom industry mentioned the issues faced by the telecom sector when compared to those of other countries.
Day 5: Digital Signal Processors and Code Composer Studio
Day 5, the last day of the one week short term training program on 'Computing, Simulation and Modeling in Electronics Engineering' was handled by Mr. Shoukath C, Design Engineer, DOEACC Center, Kozhikode. His profile has over seven years experience in embedded system design using digital signal processors. His enriching presentation in the morning session introduced the faculty to the world of digital signal processors. He clearly charted out the requirements of a DSP compared to the multipurpose Microprocessors or controllers we have in the open market. '
